Johanna Kleinert

Design | Research

I work in the fields of Product Design, Exhibition Design and Design Research.
I like food, collages and second hand bargains.

As an independant product designer I worked for clients as Rosenthal, Pyrex and Tialini. My work has been awarded with the German Design Award, the iF Design Award and the Red Dot Design Award.

As a research associate I have been teaching at the chair of Industrial Design at TUM Technical University of Munich. Prior to that, I studied Industrial Design at the Stuttgart State Academy of the Arts, at the ENSCI in Paris and at the Politecnico di Milano.
In my PhD research, I look at fruit and vegetables as designed products from the viewpoints of Design Research and Science and Technology Studies. I'm happy to announce the release of the book at Transcript Publishing.

My research interests lie in the field of food design, design and visuality, food studies and collaborations in the fields of Design Research and Science and Technology Studies.

How are today's tomatoes grown? Research for my PhD project on living products.
Being different in an age of homogenisation: Some tomatoes are valued just because of their blatant otherness.
What does product quality mean with berries? Research on the standardisation of fruit and vegetables. Here: the official electronic catalogue of defective produce 'ELSKA'.
What is good ornament? Studying the judgement and justification of ornaments – while at the same time designing a range of ceramic tiles. Some of the designes were realized for the restaurant tialini – in cooperation with Heinrichs Architekturkeramik and Heller Designstudio.
